Terminology

Psychiatrist- (MD)- a medical doctor/physician with specialized training to evaluate, diagnose and treat mental health conditions.  They have the ability to hospitalize a patient, provide consultation to other medical specialists in a hospital setting, prescribe medications/manage medications and to provide therapy.  

 

Psychologist-(PhD)- is a provider who has doctoral level training to diagnoses and treat mental health conditions.  They have  the ability to do psychological testing assessments to assist with Dx in addition to providing therapy.

 

Clinical Social Worker- (LCSW)- is a masters level trained therapist.  They can work in a hospital setting to assist with discharge planning or provide therapy on an inpatient or outpatient basis.

 

Licensed Professional Counselor- (LPC)- is a masters level trained therapist.  They can work in a hospital or outpatient setting providing counseling services.
